Looking for a local musician? Remember these tips…
So you just lost a member of your band, or you’re looking to join a band. It time to start the search… again. This is part one of a series of articles I am writing on finding and auditioning Dayton musicians. This week, I’m focusing on where to start the search.
1) Talk to other local area musicians
Go talk to your musician friends and let them know you’re are available and looking. Friends want to help friends, and if they can, they will. Go check out as many local bands as you can, and get to know the guys in the band. Maybe they could use you, or know someone who could. Talk to as many people as will listen.2) Do a little research online
OK, lets face it…there is lots of information on the web, and yes, you have to be careful, but there are lots of musicians communicating online. If you’re into social media, tell your friends on Facebook, MySpace, or Twitter that you are looking for a gig. Again, friends like to help friends, and you might just get lucky. Craigslist is another great place to look for musicians or bands looking for musicians. You can also try musolist. I actually landed a great gig using musolist, although you really have to week through the listings.3) Check out the local music stores
Local music stores always have a bulletin board filled with musicians looking for musicians. Take a look, you might find something. While you’re there strike up a conversation with one of the salespeople. Ask them if they know of anyone who’s looking for whatever you do. You might be surprised!4) Don’t get discouraged!
Last but not least, don’t get discouraged. Rome wasn’t built in a day. This is going to take a little time. Relax. Get to know some new friends. Do a little research. Go to the local music store. You’ll be rockin’ before you know it!
Got any other ideas? Let me know!
Next week… Dealing with the dreaded audition.
